          Dr. Elizabeth George is a board-certified family physician and fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. As a graduate of Brown University School of Medicine, Providence, Rhode Island, it has always been her goal to treat “the whole patient.”

         Dr. George and her husband Dr. Robert George set up practice in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania in 1980, emphasizing illness prevention through healthy lifestyles. “Dr. Liz” spearheaded the elimination of smoking from Chambersburg Hospital; she was instrumental in establishing their Maternity Clinic, helping parents establish healthy eating habits before their children were born, receiving a March of Dimes award for this effort.

       Wellness education was a key focus as medical director on mission trips to Bolivia, Ecuador and the Amazon, encouraging the traditional vegetable, tuber, and legume meals, and not falling prey to American processed foods.

 

 

She is a founder of the Mercersburg Area Council for Wellness dedicated to making Mercersburg a place that inspires wellness, including healthy eating and walkability/bikeability.  In 2010 Healthy Eating Adventure was started to share the health of whole foods plant- based eating. Dr Liz leads this community-based program that has spread beyond Franklin County PA – including a Harrisburg Adventure for seniors, an Adventure for the US Army at Carlisle Barracks, and Healthy Eating Adventure Yuma Arizona.  See the documentary at  plantstrongmovie.com which describes the beginning and 1st 10 years of this program. 

 

The results of this community program have been presented at physician continuing education conferences (including hospital CME programs, Overlook Residency, PAFP, and at the international Healthy Lifestyle Expo.  Dr. Liz worked with the hospital dining service to implement plant-based entrées at every meal. She encourages physicians to step out of regular practice and talk to their communities about healthful lifestyles.  She received the Inaugural PaAFP Community Service Award for her community wellness advocacy and projects.
